STILLWATER, MINNESOTA — A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the community of Minnesota: State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman lost their lives in a devastating incident at their home. Adding to the sorrow, the family’s beloved golden retriever, Gilbert, also had to be euthanized after being seriously injured.

What happened?

The incident occurred early morning on June 14. A man approached the Hortman residence and was later linked to a second attack involving State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette at their home about nine miles away. The Hoffmans survived the ordeal.

A double tragedy: Farewell to a loyal companion

Gilbert, the family’s Golden Retriever, was originally trained as a service dog. Though he eventually transitioned into a full-time family pet due to his exceptionally affectionate nature, Gilbert became a treasured member of the Hortman household.

“This is just heartbreaking. Melissa loved dogs and volunteered regularly with rescue organizations,” said Emily Hill, a close friend of the family.

Following the attack, Gilbert was rushed for medical treatment, but the injuries proved too severe. The family was forced to make the painful decision to let him go peacefully.

A legacy of compassion and service

Rep. Melissa Hortman, who served as Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, was widely known for her advocacy on education, the environment, and veteran support. Together with her husband Mark and their children, Melissa not only led in public office but also lived a life grounded in service, love, and community.

The family helped raise and train Gilbert, and also trained Minnie, another dog who went on to serve a veteran as a certified assistance dog.

“Melissa had no ego. She always focused on the greater good,” Hill said. “She was real, grounded, and truly dedicated — not just as a leader but as a wife, mother, and friend.”

Authorities have arrested the suspect, and investigations are underway to determine the full details and motive behind the coordinated attacks. Officials have emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of public servants and restoring a sense of security in the community.
